How Churches Can Support Mental Health: Breaking the Silence and Taking Action

For many years, mental health has been a difficult topic within Christian communities. Though churches are places of refuge and healing, conversations around mental health have often been met with discomfort or silence. The good news is that this is changing, and at Cornerstone, we are committed to helping churches embrace a compassionate, informed approach to mental health.

Why Has Mental Health Been Overlooked in Churches?

There are several reasons why mental health has not been openly discussed in churches:

→ Misunderstanding and Stigma – Historically, some have viewed mental health struggles as a sign of weak faith or personal failure. This has led individuals to suffer in silence rather than seek help.

→ Lack of Training – Pastors and church leaders are deeply committed to their congregations, but many have not received training in mental health care. Without the right tools, they may feel unprepared to address these issues.

→ Spiritualizing Struggles – While faith is a powerful source of strength, mental health conditions are not solely spiritual problems. Prayer and scripture provide comfort, but professional support is often necessary as well.

→ Fear of Overstepping – Some churches hesitate to speak on mental health, fearing that they are not equipped to deal with it properly or that it is outside their role.

→ Limited Support in Small Groups – While churches often provide small groups and life groups as a source of connection, many group leaders and members do not have the training needed to effectively support those struggling with mental health challenges.

Despite these challenges, many churches are beginning to recognize the importance of mental health.

Research shows that approximately 25% of individuals seeking treatment for mental illness turn to clergy members for assistance, indicating the significant role church leaders play across various denominations.

Another study found that 77% of church leaders are approached more than twice a year for help with mental illness, underscoring the frequency with which congregants seek support from their churches.

It seems like church leaders are growing in their awareness and ability to respond to the mental health concerns that are present in their congregation. While stigma still exists, there is a clear movement toward openness and acceptance.

Churches are increasingly incorporating mental health into sermons, offering resources, and partnering with professionals to ensure their communities receive the care they need.

The shift is happening, and it is a hopeful one.

What Can Churches Do?

Caring for the mental well-being of church members is not just an act of compassion—it is an investment in the strength of the entire church community. A healthy, supported Individual can fully engage in their faith, serve others, and contribute positively to both the church and the wider community. When churches prioritize mental health, they create an environment where members can grow spiritually, emotionally, and relationally. If you are part of a church community and want to be part of this change, here are some steps to consider:

Talk About It – Normalize discussions about mental health in sermons, small groups, and community gatherings.

Educate Leaders – Provide training for pastors, small group leaders, and church staff on how to support individuals facing mental health struggles.

Partner with Professionals – Work with organizations like Cornerstone to ensure congregants have access to professional mental health support.

Create a Safe Space – Encourage openness and let people know that struggling with mental health does not mean they lack faith.

Promote the use of available Online Resources – Not everyone is ready to seek counseling immediately. Churches can share online mental health resources, including the free tools provided by Cornerstone. These tools can help individuals better understand their struggles, find coping strategies, and guide them in making informed decisions about whether and when to seek professional help.

Connect with Cornerstone – We offer workshops and partnership opportunities for churches looking to integrate mental health support into their ministry. Additionally, churches can refer individuals to Cornerstone, where all of our therapists are Christians who understand how to sensitively integrate faith into therapy.

How Cornerstone is Partnering with Churches

At Cornerstone, we believe that faith and mental health care go hand in hand. Our partnership with VMSA Church is one example of how we are working with Christian communities to change the narrative. Through their support, we are able to provide professional counseling services at reduced costs, ensuring that financial barriers do not prevent people from getting the help they need.

Beyond financial support, we also work alongside churches to educate leaders on recognizing mental health concerns, reducing stigma, and guiding individuals toward appropriate care. By offering workshops, consultations, and open conversations, we help churches build a culture where mental well-being is prioritized.
