5 Mindfulness Practices to Try Today

If you’re ready to start practicing mindfulness but need guidance on where to begin, these beginner-friendly techniques are a great place to start. At Cornerstone Family Counselling Services, we emphasize accessible strategies to make mindfulness a part of your daily life.

1. Body Scan Meditation

This practice involves focusing on different parts of your body, noticing sensations without judgment. Start by lying down or sitting comfortably. Close your eyes and bring your attention to your toes, then gradually move up to your legs, torso, arms, and head. This practice helps you reconnect with your body and relax tense areas.

2. Box Breathing

Box breathing is a structured technique that calms your nervous system and enhances focus. Follow these steps:
· Inhale deeply for four seconds.
· Hold your breath for four seconds.
· Exhale slowly for four seconds.
· Pause for another four seconds before inhaling again. Repeat this cycle for 3–5 minutes, focusing on the rhythm of your breath.

3. Mindful Walking

Turn a simple walk into a mindfulness exercise. Pay attention to how your feet feel as they touch the ground. Notice the sounds, smells, and sights around you. Walking mindfully helps ground you in the present moment and can reduce stress.

4. Gratitude Journaling

Take five minutes each evening to write down three things you’re grateful for. These could be as simple as a kind gesture from a colleague or a moment of laughter with a friend. Reflecting on positive experiences enhances your awareness of the good in your life.

5. Guided Meditations

Begin with guided meditations from apps like Calm or book an appointment with one of our therapists to learn more about structured exercises to help you develop mindfulness skills.

Make Mindfulness a Habit

Start small and be consistent. Incorporate mindfulness into everyday activities, such as brushing your teeth, drinking coffee, or commuting to work. The goal is to make mindfulness a natural part of your routine.
