You don’t have to have it all figured out before you call. During your initial consultation or first session, we talk about what’s going on in your life and what you hope to change. Based on that, we’ll match you with the therapist and approach (like CBT, EFT, or Narrative Therapy) that best fits your goals. You can also download **[your handbook](https://cornerstonefamilycounselling.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/Cornerstone-Client-Handbook-2026.pdf)** to learn more about our approach. What can I expect in my first session? The first session is all about “the fit.” Your therapist will ask about your history, your current challenges, and what you want to achieve. It’s a safe, non-judgmental space for you to share your story. By the end, you should have a sense of whether you feel comfortable with your therapist and a rough idea of how we’ll work together. Do I need a doctor’s referral? No. In Ontario, you do not need a referral from a physician to see a Registered Psychotherapist. You can book an appointment directly through our website or by calling our office. Is therapy covered by insurance? While psychotherapy is not covered by OHIP, most extended health benefit plans (workplace insurance) do cover services provided by **Registered Psychotherapists (RP)** and **Registered Psychotherapists (Qualifying) (RPQ)**.** Please note that we do not bill insurance companies directly.** At the end of your session, we provide you with an official receipt that you can submit to your provider for reimbursement. We strongly recommend calling your insurance provider beforehand to confirm that “Registered Psychotherapy” is included in your specific plan.** What are your rates? Our rates vary depending on the experience level of the therapist: - Registered Psychotherapists:** $150 – $170 per 50-60 minutes session. - **Intern Therapists:** $50 per 50-60 minutes session. **Detailed pricing can be found on our *[*Fees & Accessibility*](https://cornerstonefamilycounselling.com/fees-and-accessibility/)* page.* Do you offer lower-cost options? Yes. We believe therapy should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their financial situation. We offer several options to ensure you can get the help you need:   - [Supervised Intern Program**](https://cornerstonefamilycounselling.com/ways-to-get-help/affordable-therapy/)**:** We offer sessions at a significantly reduced rate of **$50**. These are student therapists completing their Master’s degrees who are closely supervised by our senior clinical team. - **Subsidized Therapy for Peel Residents:** We offer **free therapy** to qualified **residents of the Region of Peel** who are currently receiving **ODSP** (Ontario Disability Support Program) or **OW** (Ontario Works). - **Sliding Scale Fees:** For those who do not qualify for the above but still face financial barriers, we offer sliding scale fees. These rates are adjusted based on your total household income and the size of your family.  **Note:** Our low-cost and subsidized spots are limited and subject to availability. Please inquire about current availability. Do you offer online counselling? Yes! We offer secure, [video-based therapy](https://cornerstonefamilycounselling.com/ways-to-get-help/online-therapy/) to anyone living in **Ontario**. Online therapy is just as effective as in-person sessions and is a great option for those with busy schedules or those living outside the Mississauga/Peel region. Do I have to be Christian to come to Cornerstone? Not at all. While we offer **optional** Christian-integrated counselling, we serve clients from all backgrounds, cultures, and belief systems. If you want your faith incorporated into your healing, we are equipped to do that; if you prefer a purely clinical approach, we respect that completely. What if I don't "click" with my therapist? The relationship between you and your therapist is the biggest predictor of success. If for any reason it doesn’t feel like the right match after a few sessions, please let us know. We are happy to help you transition to another member of our team who might be a better fit. Is everything I say confidential? Absolutely. Your privacy is protected by law (PHIPA). There are only a few legal exceptions to this (such as if there is an immediate risk of harm to yourself or others, or if a child is at risk), which your therapist will explain in detail during your first session.
