A Compassionate Path to Healing: What Faith-Integrated Counselling Looks Like in Mississauga

At Cornerstone, we believe that true healing touches every part of who you are—your thoughts, your feelings, your relationships, and your deepest values and beliefs. For many people, faith is an essential part of that whole. That’s why we’re dedicated to offering something unique in Mississauga: a safe space where you can bring your complete self, including your spiritual life, into your therapeutic journey. We call this faith-integrated counselling.

Faith-Integrated Counselling at Cornerstone

At Cornerstone, we meet you where you are. Our team of licensed, master’s-level therapists provides professional, evidence-based care for anyone seeking support with life’s challenges.

For some clients, faith is an important part of their identity and healing journey. If you choose, we can thoughtfully integrate your Christian beliefs into our work together—exploring how your values provide strength, meaning, or guidance as you navigate difficult times. This integration happens naturally within proven therapeutic frameworks, never replacing evidence-based professional treatment but enriching it when you find it helpful.

If faith isn’t part of your life or isn’t something you want to explore in therapy, that choice is completely respected. You’ll receive the same high-quality, compassionate care focused entirely on your goals and well-being.

Our starting point is always you—your unique story, your goals, and what you need to move forward. Whether or not spiritual beliefs are part of your journey, you’ll find a safe, non-judgmental space here to work through challenges and build the life you want.

Our Clinical Foundation: Evidence-Based and Deeply Human

At our core, Cornerstone is a practice built on clinical excellence. All of our therapists are fully licensed mental health professionals, registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). This ensures that every therapist you work with is held to the highest standards of professional conduct, ethics, and accountability. Our team is rigorously trained in well-researched, evidence-based therapeutic approaches. We use proven methods like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), EMDR and trauma-informed care to help you navigate real-life challenges such as anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and trauma. You can verify a therapist’s registration at any time through the CRPO Public Register.

This commitment to clinical rigour is central to our identity. Our Clinical Director, Father Pishoy Wasfy, holds a PhD and a Doctor of Counselling and Psychotherapy (DCP), and he champions the blend of clinical science and compassionate care.

Mental health challenges are complex and multifaceted. Faith can be a powerful resource for healing. We treat conditions like clinical depression, anxiety disorders, and trauma with the seriousness and expertise they deserve, often finding that spiritual and psychological healing can work beautifully together. This blend is what sets us apart and allows us to provide truly holistic care.

Our therapists are also practicing Christians who deeply understand how faith can be a source of both strength and complexity. This shared understanding allows us to have meaningful, nuanced conversations about topics like:

  • Spiritual guilt or shame
  • Feelings of doubt or confusion
  • Painful experiences within a church or faith community
  • Major faith transitions

This doesn’t mean your faith will be the focus of every session. In fact, for many clients, it isn’t. The decision to integrate faith is always yours. We follow your lead, respect your pace, and ensure you feel safe and in control of the process.

Who Finds a Home at Cornerstone? You.

You belong here, exactly as you are.

We’ve had the privilege of walking alongside a diverse range of clients in Mississauga. We’ve supported people who find deep comfort and strength in their faith, and we’ve also supported people who are grappling with painful religious experiences. Some clients are exploring different spiritual traditions, others identify as agnostic or atheist, and many come from diverse religious backgrounds.

Our commitment to compassionate, professional care is the same for everyone. What matters most is that you’re seeking support and growth. The beauty of our approach is its flexibility. Faith integration isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution; it’s a deeply personal process.

Here’s a closer look at what faith integration might look like for you, depending on your needs:

If you are seeking active faith integration, we might:

  • Explore how your spiritual beliefs can support your healing journey.
  • Include prayer or scripture reflection when it brings you comfort and clarity.
  • Process difficult experiences related to religion or church.
  • Examine how your faith informs your values, decisions, and relationships.
  • Address conflicts between your beliefs and your experiences.
  • Work through feelings of spiritual guilt, shame, or confusion.

If you prefer minimal or no faith integration, you can expect:

  • To have a therapist who understands your faith background without making it the focus.
  • To receive purely evidence-based therapeutic approaches like CBT and EFT.
  • The confidence that your therapist won’t judge you for your beliefs or lack thereof.
  • To know that spiritual topics won’t be forced into conversations where they don’t belong.

For those of us who are somewhere in-between, you’ll find:

  • Occasional, respectful references to spiritual concepts when they naturally arise in conversation.
  • Acknowledgment of your faith background, while the primary focus remains on clinical interventions.
  • Permission to explore spiritual themes when you’re ready, without any pressure.

The choice is always yours. We follow your lead, honour your pace, and never impose our beliefs on your healing process.

The Sacred Nature of Healing

We believe your healing journey is sacred—not because it has to be religious, but because you are valuable and deserving of compassionate, skilled support. Whether your journey includes explicit spiritual elements or focuses entirely on psychological and emotional growth, we honour it as meaningful and important.

Our goal is to help you find hope, heal, and grow in ways that feel authentic and meaningful to you. We’re not here to convert, convince, or change what you believe. We’re here to walk alongside you, offering our professional expertise and genuine care. Sometimes that includes faith; sometimes it doesn’t. Both paths are valid, and both are welcome here.
