Mindfulness-Based Therapy in Mississauga

Mindfulness-based therapy helps people in Mississauga and Peel Region change their relationship with difficult thoughts and feelings — not by eliminating them, but by learning to respond to them more deliberately rather than being pulled around by them.

What Is Mindfulness-Based Therapy?

This is not about achieving a blank mind or permanent calm. The aim is to change your relationship with experience. Instead of automatically reacting to every anxious thought or uncomfortable feeling, you learn to notice what is arising and make more deliberate choices about how to respond.


Two well-researched programmes underpin most mindfulness-based therapy: MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction) and MBCT (Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy) — developed specifically for people at risk of recurring depression and recommended by NICE in the UK for that purpose.

Key Skills It Develops

  • Present moment awareness — bringing attention back from past or future
  • Non-judgmental observation — noticing thoughts without labelling yourself
  • Acceptance — making room for uncomfortable experiences rather than fighting them
  • Self-compassion — treating yourself with the care you would offer someone you respect

How We Use This at Cornerstone

Mindfulness is woven into therapy rather than delivered as a standalone programme. Your therapist introduces practices in the context of what you are working on and teaches you how to apply them to the specific patterns affecting your life.
 
Often combined with ACT, CBT, and trauma-informed care. For clients who practise faith, mindfulness practices can be integrated with Christian contemplative traditions if that is meaningful to you.
 
Every therapist holds a master’s degree and is CRPO-registered. Our Clinical Director holds a PhD and a Doctor of Counselling and Psychotherapy. English, French, and Arabic. In person in Mississauga and online across Ontario.
