Individual Therapy in Mississauga and Peel Region

One-on-one support, when you need it most.

Life gets hard. Sometimes you need a space that’s just yours to work through what’s going on, figure out what you want, or simply feel heard. Individual therapy gives you that space, with a registered psychotherapist who is trained to help.

At Cornerstone, our therapists work with you at your pace. No judgment. No pressure. Just real support from someone who knows how to help.

What Is Individual Therapy?

Individual therapy is a one-on-one conversation between you and a registered psychotherapist. It’s a private, confidential space where you can talk openly about what’s on your mind, explore what’s been holding you back, and work toward feeling better.

Sessions are typically 50 to 90 minutes, depending on what you need. Some people come for a few sessions to work through something specific. Others find that ongoing therapy helps them grow over time. There’s no one-size-fits-all timeline, and your therapist will work with you to figure out what makes sense.

What Can Individual Therapy Help With?

People come to us for a wide range of reasons. Some know exactly what they want to work on. Others just know something doesn’t feel right and they’re not sure where to start. Either way, that’s okay.

Our therapists regularly support people dealing with anxiety and worry, depression and low mood, grief and loss, trauma and past experiences that still hurt, burnout and work-related stress, life transitions like moving, job changes, or retirement, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem and self-confidence, anger management, and identity and personal growth.

We also have a few helpful tools, videos and blog posts on our website, including self-assessments and guides, if you want to explore what you’re experiencing before reaching out.

If you don’t see your concern mentioned, don’t let that stop you from reaching out. A free consultation is a good way to ask questions and see if Cornerstone feels right for you.

How We Work With You

Every therapist at Cornerstone holds a master’s degree and is registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). Our Clinical Director, Father Pishoy Wasfy, holds a PhD and a Doctorate in Counselling and Psychotherapy (DCP), and provides ongoing clinical oversight to our team.

We use evidence-based approaches, which means the methods your therapist uses are backed by research and have been shown to work. Depending on what you’re going through, your therapist might draw on approaches like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which helps you change unhelpful thinking patterns; Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), which is effective for trauma; Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), which helps you understand and work with your emotions; or Attachment-Based Therapy, which looks at how your early relationships shape who you are today.

If faith is important to you, we also offer optional Christian faith integration. This is always your choice and never required.

You don’t need to know which approach is right for you. Your therapist will talk with you about what fits your situation best.

Session Options

50-60 Minutes

Our standard session length. A focused, productive time for most people and most concerns.

A longer option for deeper work, complex situations, or if you simply find you need more time to settle in and process.

You choose what works for you. If you’re not sure, start with a standard session and go from there.

What to Expect

The free 15-minute consultation is a good first step. It’s a short, no-pressure call where you can ask questions, share a bit about what’s going on, and get a feel for whether Cornerstone is the right fit. There’s no commitment involved.

Your first full session is different. It goes deeper. This is where you and your therapist begin to get to know each other properly, talk through what brought you in, and start to shape what you want to work on. You don’t need to have everything figured out before you come in. Your therapist will guide the conversation.

Over time, you’ll work together toward the goals you set. You might gain tools to manage anxiety or stress, develop a clearer picture of your patterns and where they come from, rebuild your confidence, or simply have a consistent place to process what life throws at you.

Most people feel some relief just from being heard. The deeper work builds from there.

FAQ: Individual Therapy

Do I need a referral to start individual therapy at Cornerstone?

No referral is needed. You can contact us directly to book an appointment or schedule a free 15-minute consultation to ask questions before committing.

This is different for everyone. Some people work through a specific issue in 6 to 10 sessions. Others find that longer-term therapy helps them continue growing and managing life’s challenges. Your therapist will talk with you about your goals and check in regularly on how things are going.

Many extended health benefit plans cover psychotherapy with a Registered Psychotherapist (RP). We recommend checking with your insurance provider before your first session. We do not direct bill, but we provide receipts you can submit for reimbursement.

A psychotherapist is trained specifically in talk therapy and helping people work through emotional and mental health challenges. At Cornerstone, all our therapists are Registered Psychotherapists (RPs) with master’s degrees. A psychologist typically holds a doctorate and may provide psychological testing and assessment in addition to therapy. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can prescribe medication. If you need medication as part of your care, your family doctor or a psychiatrist would be the right contact, and we’re happy to work alongside them.

Yes. Everything you share with your therapist is private and protected. There are very limited exceptions required by law, such as if there is a risk of harm to you or someone else, or if a child is in danger. Your therapist will explain this fully at your first session.

A good fit matters. If you feel like the match isn’t right, let us know and we will do our best to connect you with someone else on our team. There’s no judgment in that.

We offer services in English, French and Arabic. If you have a language need, let us know when you contact us.

If you’re dealing with something personal, individual therapy is often the best starting point. If your concern involves your relationship, couples therapy might be more appropriate. If it’s a family dynamic, family therapy might fit better. If you’re unsure, book a free consultation and we’ll help you figure out the right direction.

Yes. We offer secure online sessions for clients across Ontario. Online therapy works just as well as in-person for most people and is a great option if you prefer to attend from home or have a busy schedule.

We have options. Our sliding scale fees are based on your income, and we offer affordable therapy through our supervised intern program at $50 per session. If you receive Ontario Works (OW) or Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) support and live in Peel, you may qualify for free therapy through our CARE grant. Reach out and we’ll figure out what works for your situation.
