Trauma-Informed Therapy in Mississauga

Trauma-informed therapy is not a single technique. It is a way of working that puts safety, trust, and pacing ahead of everything else. You decide what to share and when. Nothing is rushed.

At Cornerstone, these principles shape how we work with every client, not only people who identify as trauma survivors. If you’re looking for more on trauma symptoms and PTSD specifically, visit our Trauma & PTSD page.

What Is Trauma-Informed Therapy?

The central question shifts from “What is wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?” Reactions like shutting down, avoiding, feeling numb, or staying hypervigilant are treated as survival strategies your mind and body developed to protect you.

The Five Core Principles

Safety: Physical and emotional safety established in every interaction, from the first call through every session.

Trustworthiness:  Your therapist explains what will happen and why. Nothing happens without your understanding and agreement.

Collaboration: You are an active partner in your own care. Your therapist works with you, not on you.

Empowerment: You decide what to share, when, and at what pace. Control belongs to you throughout.

Peer Connection: Recognizing that isolation makes trauma harder, and that genuine human connection is part of healing.

How We Use This at Cornerstone

Trauma-informed principles underpin all clinical work at Cornerstone. Within that framework, your therapist may also draw on EMDR for processing specific memories, attachment-based approaches for rebuilding trust, and somatic awareness, which means paying attention to how trauma shows up in the body.

No therapist at Cornerstone will push trauma processing before safety and rapport are genuinely established. Building that foundation is part of the therapy itself.

Every therapist holds a master’s degree and is CRPO-registered. Our Clinical Director holds a PhD and a Doctor of Counselling and Psychotherapy. English, French, and Arabic. In person in Mississauga and online across Ontario. Reduced rate sessions may also be available through our affordable therapy options for qualifying Peel Region residents.
