Every family goes through rough patches. Conflict, distance, stress, or a change none of you asked for. Family therapy gives everyone a place to be heard and a way to move forward together, with a registered psychotherapist guiding the conversation.
At Cornerstone, we work with families as they actually are, not how they’re supposed to look. Blended families, single-parent households, multigenerational homes, families navigating a new country, language, or culture — all are welcome here.
Family therapy is a type of counselling where two or more family members meet together with a registered psychotherapist. The goal is not to assign blame or pick sides. It’s to help the people in the room understand each other better, communicate more clearly, and find a way through whatever is making things hard.
Sessions are typically 50 to 90 minutes. Some families come for a short series of sessions focused on one specific problem. Others work together over a longer period, especially when the issues are more complex or have been building for a while. Your therapist will help you figure out what makes sense for your situation.

Families come to us at all kinds of moments. Some are in the middle of a crisis. Others have been quietly struggling for years and finally decided to do something about it. Some just want to communicate better before things get worse.
Our therapists regularly support families dealing with:
We also have a growing library of resources including articles, tools, and videos if you want to explore what you’re going through before reaching out.
If you don’t see your situation mentioned, don’t let that stop you from reaching out. A free consultation is a good way to ask questions and see if Cornerstone feels right for you.
Every therapist at Cornerstone holds a master’s degree and is registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). Our Clinical Director, Father Pishoy Wasfy, holds a PhD and a Doctorate in Counselling and Psychotherapy (DCP), and provides ongoing clinical oversight to our entire team.
We use evidence-based approaches, meaning the methods your therapist draws on are backed by research. For family therapy, this often includes:
You don’t need to come in knowing any of this. Your therapist will explain their approach and check in with you regularly to make sure it’s working.
If faith matters to your family, we also offer optional Christian faith integration. This is always your choice.
A focused session well-suited to families working on a specific issue or checking in on progress.
A longer session that allows more space for complex family dynamics, multiple voices, and deeper conversations.
We offer both in-person sessions at our Mississauga office and online sessions across Ontario. While online works well for many families, in-person sessions can be especially helpful when emotions are running high, as being in the same room often helps people stay engaged and connected to each other.

If you’re not sure where to start, the free 15-minute consultation is a good first step. It’s a short, no-pressure call to ask questions, share a bit about what’s going on, and see if Cornerstone feels like the right fit. There’s no commitment involved.
Your first full session is different. It goes deeper. Your therapist will take time to understand your family’s story, hear from everyone present, and get a sense of what you’re hoping to change. You don’t need to have a clear agenda walking in. The therapist will guide the conversation.
Over time, you’ll work together toward goals that make sense for your family. Most families notice a shift in how they talk to each other before they notice anything else. The bigger changes build from there.
Our main office is at 6341 Mississauga Road, with easy access for families coming from across Peel Region. We offer both in-person and online sessions to make it work for you.
We provide services in English, French, and Arabic, and we welcome families from all backgrounds and communities. For families who are new to Canada, we understand that navigating a new country adds its own layer of pressure on top of everything else. Our therapists are trained to work across cultures and will meet your family where you are.

Not necessarily. Your therapist will talk with you about who should be involved and when. Sometimes it makes sense for all members to attend together. Other times, individual sessions alongside family sessions work better. It depends on what you’re working through and what’s happening at home.
This is common. You can still start the process even if not everyone is on board right away. Sometimes one or two family members beginning therapy opens the door for others to join later. Your therapist can help you think through how to approach this.
No. Couples therapy focuses specifically on the relationship between two partners. Family therapy involves two or more family members and looks at the broader dynamics within the household. If you’re not sure which is right for you, a free consultation can help clarify that. We offer both couples therapy and family therapy at Cornerstone.
Children of most ages can participate, though the way a therapist engages a young child looks different from how they’d work with a teenager or adult. For children who need individual support alongside family work, we also offer children and youth therapy.
Yes. What’s shared in family therapy is private. There are narrow exceptions required by law, such as if there is a risk of harm to someone or if a child’s safety is at stake. Your therapist will explain this at your first session.
It varies. Some families work through a specific issue in 6 to 10 sessions. Others benefit from longer-term support, especially where there’s complex history or multiple challenges happening at once. Your therapist will check in regularly to make sure the work is still moving in the right direction.
Many extended health benefit plans cover psychotherapy with a Registered Psychotherapist (RP). We recommend checking with your insurance provider before your first session. We do not direct bill, but we provide receipts you can submit for reimbursement.
Yes. We offer secure online sessions for families across Ontario. This works well for many families, particularly those with scheduling challenges or who live further from our Mississauga office. Your therapist can advise on whether in-person would be more beneficial for your specific situation.
It’s not uncommon for things to feel more uncomfortable at first. Therapy surfaces issues that have sometimes been avoided for a long time. Your therapist will help your family manage this and will pace the work thoughtfully. If at any point you feel it’s not working, say so. That conversation is always welcome.
A good fit matters. If something doesn’t feel right, let us know and we’ll do our best to connect your family with someone else on our team. There’s no judgment in that.

We are celebrating 15 years of making professional mental health care accessible in Peel Region, and we would love for you to be part of it.
