Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) in Mississauga

ACT helps people in Mississauga and Peel Region build a different relationship with difficult thoughts and emotions — one where those feelings have less control over daily choices and behaviour.

What Is ACT?

The harder you try to control or push away difficult thoughts and feelings, the more powerful they tend to become. ACT suggests this struggle is often part of the problem.

Rather than asking “How do I feel better?”, ACT asks “How do I live according to what matters to me, even while I feel this way?” It teaches psychological flexibility — the ability to stay present with difficult inner experiences while still taking meaningful action.

The Six Core Skills

Acceptance — Making room for difficult feelings rather than fighting them.

Cognitive Defusion — Seeing thoughts as just thoughts, not commands. “I am having the thought that I will fail” creates distance from “I will fail.”

Present Moment Awareness — Bringing attention back to now rather than past regrets or future worries.

Self as Context — Recognising the part of you that observes thoughts and is not defined by them.

Values Clarification — Identifying what genuinely matters to you. Values become a compass when emotions pull you in unhelpful directions.

Committed Action — Taking concrete steps aligned with your values, even when uncomfortable.

ACT is supported by more than 200 clinical trials and recognised as empirically supported by the APA.

How We Use ACT at Cornerstone

ACT is applied practically — sessions include experiential exercises, metaphors, and between-session practices. It works particularly well for clients from collectivist or faith-based backgrounds because the values component creates space for cultural and spiritual identity to be part of the work.

Every therapist holds a master’s degree and is CRPO-registered. Our Clinical Director holds a PhD and a Doctor of Counselling and Psychotherapy. English, French, and Arabic. In person in Mississauga and online across Ontario.
