Online Therapy in Ontario — Available Across the Province

Real therapy, with a real therapist, from wherever you are.

Online therapy through Cornerstone works exactly the same as coming in. You get a registered psychotherapist, a structured therapeutic approach, and consistent support — just without the commute.

If you’ve been putting off getting support because of scheduling, distance, mobility, childcare, or just not wanting to sit in a waiting room, online therapy removes most of those barriers. It’s available to anyone in Ontario.

What Is Online Therapy?

Online therapy — also called virtual therapy or teletherapy — is a one-on-one session with a registered psychotherapist over a secure video platform. It’s confidential, structured, and follows the same clinical standards as in-person sessions.

It’s not a chatbot. It’s not a self-help app. It’s a real therapeutic relationship with a qualified professional who knows your history, tracks your progress, and adjusts their approach based on what you need.

We offer online individual therapy, couples therapy, family therapy, children and youth therapy, and pre-marital counselling. If a service is available in-person, it is available online.

Who Is Online Therapy For?

Online therapy works well for a wide range of people and situations. It tends to be a particularly good fit if you:

For some people, particularly younger children and those in couples or family therapy, in-person sessions can offer advantages. Your therapist will be straightforward with you if they think in-person would serve you better.

How We Work With You

Every therapist at Cornerstone holds a master’s degree and is registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). Our Clinical Director, Father Pishoy Wasfy, holds a PhD and a Doctorate in Counselling and Psychotherapy (DCP), and provides ongoing oversight to our entire team.

Online therapy at Cornerstone uses the same evidence-based approaches as our in-person sessions, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), EMDR, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and Attachment-Based Therapy, depending on what you’re working through and who you’re matched with.

If faith matters to you, optional Christian faith integration is available online just as it is in-person.

We offer sessions in English, French, and Arabic.

What to Expect

The free 15-minute consultation is a good starting point if you’re unsure. It’s a short call — no commitment — where you can ask questions and get a feel for whether Cornerstone is the right fit.

Your first full session is where the real work begins. Your therapist will take time to understand your situation, your goals, and what’s been going on. By the end, you’ll have a sense of what the work ahead looks like and whether the approach feels right.

From there, most clients settle into a regular rhythm, typically weekly or bi-weekly. Your therapist will check in on progress regularly and adjust the plan as things shift.

A Word About AI Therapy Apps

AI chatbots and therapy apps are increasingly popular, and we understand the appeal — they’re available at 2 a.m., they don’t judge, and they’re often free or low cost.

But they are not therapy.

A chatbot cannot build a therapeutic relationship. It cannot assess risk. It cannot adapt a clinical approach based on what’s actually happening in your life. And growing evidence suggests that for people dealing with more than mild stress, relying on AI tools may delay getting help that actually works.

The American Psychological Association (APA) has raised formal concerns about AI therapy apps, and it’s worth understanding why before you choose one over a real therapist. We wrote about it here: Why the APA Is Warning About AI Therapy Apps

FAQ: Online Therapy

Is online therapy as effective as in-person therapy?

For most concerns, yes. Research consistently shows that online therapy produces outcomes comparable to in-person therapy for anxiety, depression, stress, relationship difficulties, and many other mental health concerns. Some situations — such as younger children or complex trauma — may be better suited to in-person work, and your therapist will be upfront with you if that’s the case.

A private space, a device with a working camera and microphone (smartphone, tablet, or computer), and a stable internet connection. Your therapist will send a secure link before your session. No software downloads are required.

Yes. Sessions are held on an encrypted, secure video platform compliant with Ontario privacy standards. The same confidentiality rules that apply to in-person therapy apply online. Your therapist will explain the limits of confidentiality at your first session.

Yes. Couples therapy, family therapy, and pre-marital counselling are all available online. For younger children, in-person is often more effective, and your therapist may suggest that option. For most teens and adults, online works well.

No. Online therapy through Cornerstone is available to anyone in Ontario. The only exception is the CARE grant program, which provides funded therapy for OW or ODSP recipients and is limited to Peel Region residents.

Many extended health benefit plans cover psychotherapy with a Registered Psychotherapist (RP), whether in-person or online. We recommend checking with your provider. We do not direct bill, but we issue receipts you can submit for reimbursement.

That’s worth mentioning when you book. Some people feel more comfortable turning their camera on once they know their therapist, and that’s fine. Phone sessions may also be an option depending on the type of therapy. Ask during your free consultation.

Online therapy connects you with a real registered psychotherapist who builds a genuine therapeutic relationship with you over time. An AI app is a programmed tool — it cannot clinically assess you, adapt a treatment approach, or respond to crisis situations. For more on this, read: Why the APA Is Warning About AI Therapy Apps
