Depression is a real and treatable mental health condition. At Cornerstone, we work with individuals and families across Mississauga and Peel Region to make sense of what is happening and find a way forward. We use approaches with strong research behind them, and we meet people where they are — whether this is the first time they have reached out for help or they have tried before and are trying again.
You are exhausted but cannot sleep. Things you used to enjoy feel flat or pointless. Getting through the day feels like a constant effort. You might feel sad, empty, or numb. You are harder on yourself than you would ever be on anyone else.
Depression is real, it is not your fault, and it is treatable.
Depression does not look the same in everyone. Some people feel a deep sadness that will not lift. Others feel more numb than sad — just going through the motions without really feeling present. Some people sleep too much; others cannot sleep at all. Some withdraw from the people around them; others push through their days without anyone around them realising how much effort it takes.
For some men, depression shows up more as irritability, frustration, or restlessness than sadness. For parents, it can look like guilt about not being able to show up the way they want to for their children. For newcomers adjusting to life in Canada, it can be tangled up with loss, isolation, and the pressure of a new environment. There is no single version of what depression looks like, which is part of why it often goes unrecognised for a long time.

Depression affects the way you think, feel, and function. It can make problems feel larger and solutions feel further away than they actually are. It can affect your sleep, your appetite, your concentration, and your relationships. Over time, it can become harder to remember what it felt like to not feel this way.
Depression changes how the brain processes information, and that can make it very hard to see a way out from the inside. This is also why reaching out to a professional is not a sign of weakness — it is a practical step, the same way you would see a doctor for a physical health concern that was not getting better on its own.
Research consistently shows that therapy is one of the most effective treatments for depression. The skills and shifts in thinking that come from therapy tend to stay with a person after sessions end, which means the work you do in therapy continues to help over time.
At Cornerstone, therapy for depression is not one-size-fits-all. Your therapist will work with you to understand your specific situation and choose approaches that fit.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or CBT, is one of the most well-researched treatments for depression. It helps you identify patterns of thinking that keep depression in place and develop more realistic, balanced ways of looking at yourself and your circumstances. Behavioural Activation — a core part of CBT for depression — helps you gradually re-engage with activities and connections that depression tends to pull you away from.
For some people, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a better fit. ACT focuses less on changing your thoughts and more on changing your relationship with them — learning to function and move toward what matters even when difficult feelings are present.
Where past experiences or losses are part of what is driving the depression, trauma-informed approaches and attachment-based therapy give us tools to work at a deeper level.
Your therapist will explain what they are recommending and why, and you can ask questions at any point. The goal is a process that makes sense to you, not one that feels like something being done to you.

There is no threshold you have to reach before asking for help. But some signs that it may be time to talk to someone include:
If you or someone you know is in crisis, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. Additional resources at cornerstonefamilycounselling.com/emergency-contacts/
Cornerstone has been serving Mississauga and Peel Region for 15 years. Every therapist on our team holds a master’s degree and is registered with CRPO (the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario). Our Clinical Director, Father Pishoy Wasfy, holds a PhD and a Doctor of Counselling and Psychotherapy from Yorkville University, and provides supervision across our clinical team.
We offer sessions in English, French, and Arabic. For clients who face financial barriers, affordable therapy options are available, including sessions through the CARE Program for qualifying residents of Peel Region and low-cost sessions with supervised intern therapists.
Appointments are available in person at our Mississauga location and online across Ontario. We have evening and Saturday availability for those who cannot come during regular business hours. If you are not ready, just check out our curated videos and helpful tools.
For many people in our community, faith is a meaningful part of how they understand suffering, resilience, and healing. If this is true for you, our therapists can work with that. Christian faith-integrated counselling is available at Cornerstone for those who want it — not as a replacement for evidence-based therapy, but alongside it.
This is always your choice. Our sessions are just as effective without faith integration, and no one will assume it is something you want.
